What is an MOT?

Once a vehicle is over 3 years old, an annual MOT check is required by law in the UK for all vehicles. It is a thorough inspection carried out by professionals to check that the vehicle is safe and roadworthy, following strict criteria set by the DVSA.

An MOT test involves a wide range of different checks on your car or vehicle, ranging from major aspects such as the brakes and fuel system to common issues including lights, mirrors, seatbelts, windscreen wipers and the exhaust system.

MOT tests do not assess the condition of some parts of the vehicle, including the engine, clutch, and gearbox.

How often in an MOT required?

Any vehicle that is older than 3 years old must have a valid MOT certificate, which is required to be renewed once a year by law.

There are some exceptions in that some vehicles need an MOT assessment if they are older than 1 year, however, generally, if a vehicle is newer than 3 years you do not need to take your car for an MOT until it reaches the third anniversary of when the vehicle was first registered.

The MOT certificate is then valid for 12 months from the expiry of your previous certificate.

When should an MOT be performed?

An MOT inspection can be performed up to 28 days before the expiry date displayed on the last MOT certificate.

For instance, if an MOT certificate concludes on the 20th November, the vehicle can be taken for its next annual MOT test between the 22nd October and the 20th November. From there, the new MOT certificate would then be valid up until the 20th November the subsequent year.
